Leicester City Football Club Disability Support Association have teamed up with Alan March Sport to offer our members Audio Descriptive Commentary on match days for our supporters who have visual impairments to help them enjoy their match day experience.
The first questions asked about audio description, or AD, is “What is it? How is it different to what I hear anyway?”. Audio describers are trained to keep up with play to the second, and focus on the action – if something happens in the match, the listener will know exactly what happened, where it occurred and how it transpired.
Alan March Sport pride themselves on delivering this service, and currently provide it for Wembley Stadium, Leicester City, Nottingham Forest, Crawley Town and Mansfield Town.
They work closely with Premier League Productions to deliver audio description on their online video content and continue enjoy a growing working relationship with the Centre For Access to Football in Europe (CAFE), providing ADC at the 2017 Champions League and Europa League finals.
They delivered audio description for all of the events at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014, and were heavily involved in advisory, training and delivery roles at the Rio 2016 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
All their commentators are trained to the highest standard to deliver not only the commentary itself, but also before and after care to visually impaired spectators, so listeners don’t miss anything that happens on the field, but are kept fully up to date with any information they need.
Supporters wishing to access the service at the King Power Stadium can do so by visiting the entrance in the west corner of the South Stand (known as the Kop located by turnstiles 13-16).
You’ll find one of our team who will be happy to give you a receiver and a headset to listen to the commentary. We do however recommend that you bring your own headphones/earphones to be more comfortable.
Meeting the Team for Match Days
There are four main volunteer commentators who look after the audio description provision:
Rob Hayes: Rob co-ordinates our team at Leicester City, looking after rotas, equipment and the overall running of the service. He is a City fan, and an original member of the commentary team, joining when the service launched in 2013. Rob regularly provides ADC at Wembley Stadium for England internationals, cup finals and play-offs, and was behind the microphone for the Champions League and Europa League finals in Cardiff and Stockholm respectively.
Pete Selby: Like Rob, Pete is a lifelong supporter and an original member of the team. During his four years with the LCFC AD service Pete has carved out a career for himself in the world of broadcasting. He was part of the Alan March Sport AD team at the Rio 2016 Paralympics, and the 2017 Blind Football European Championships.
Alex Cuthbert: Since coming on board in the summer of 2016, Alex has been a regular behind the microphone and has become a well-known character amongst the listenership. Also a City fan, you’ll find him watching or playing football whenever he can.
Danny Green: The newest member of our team, Danny joined for the start of the 2017/18 season having attended our summer training session. He loves most sport, and has settled in really well in his short time at the King Power.
As well as our four regulars, we have great strength in depth across our audio description network, and you’ll often hear Steven Jamieson (Wembley, Nottingham Forest), Tom Haslam (LCFC AD), Dave Rogers (Rio 2016, Berlin 2017) and Mark Perkins (Rio 2016) on duty.
